Antique Sheraton Revival Inlaid Mahogany Lady’s Writing Desk Secret Compartment

$2500.00

Beautiful antique Sheraton Revival lady’s writing desk with matching chair, dating to approximately circa 1890–1910. This finely crafted desk features elegant marquetry and inlaid wood decoration throughout, showcasing the high level of craftsmanship typical of turn-of-the-century furniture. The desk is constructed with mahogany veneers and decorative inlays, including geometric diamond motifs on the drawer fronts and cabinet doors, as well as fine string inlay bordering the writing surface. The warm wood tones and graceful proportions make this piece both functional and highly decorative. The upper gallery section includes multiple small drawers and cabinet compartments for organizing writing materials, while the lower writing surface provides a comfortable workspace. The desk stands on slender tapered legs, characteristic of the Sheraton revival style popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A particularly interesting feature of this desk is a hidden mechanical compartment. A concealed switch inside one of the drawers releases a side panel, revealing a secret storage compartment, an ingenious detail often incorporated into higher-quality writing desks of the period. The desk is accompanied by its matching wooden chair, which features coordinating inlay work and a beautifully grained seat panel. An envelope found inside the desk references Perkins Brothers, a historic Detroit retailer, suggesting the desk may have originally been sold through their store. Michigan, particularly Grand Rapids, was a major American furniture manufacturing center during this period, and the quality of construction suggests it may have been produced by one of the respected Midwestern furniture makers of the era.
